What information do you need for an injection moulding quotation?
A quotation checklist covering drawings, materials, quantities, quality requirements and the operations you want included.
Send the latest drawing or 3D model, material requirements, expected quantities, target timing and required manufacturing scope. If a detail is still undecided, identify it as an open question. A clearly labelled assumption is more useful than an unconfirmed specification.
Prepare the product information
- Share the part number and drawing revision so everyone works from the same version.
- Include 3D geometry and a drawing identifying critical dimensions, tolerances and cosmetic surfaces where available.
- Specify the resin grade and colour if fixed; otherwise explain the application and properties being considered.
- Describe mating components, inserts, decoration and assembly requirements.
For confidential designs, first agree on confidentiality arrangements and a suitable file-sharing channel with the team. The initial enquiry can describe the project without attaching sensitive files.
Explain the demand and delivery plan
| Input | What to provide |
|---|---|
| Volumes | Prototype or trial quantities, expected annual demand and typical order size. |
| Timing | Target first samples, pilot build and production start. Identify fixed milestones. |
| Tooling | New tooling or transfer; tool ownership and any existing tool records. |
| Delivery | Destination, packaging, labelling and shipment frequency. |
| Scope | Moulding, printing, coating, marking, assembly and required inspection documents. |
A programme with frequent small orders may require a different production and logistics plan from the same annual volume delivered in larger batches. Provide both the annual forecast and the expected release pattern.
Make quality requirements visible
Identify which characteristics are essential to function or appearance. Explain the inspection records, traceability and approval samples you expect. Where a customer specification or validation protocol applies, provide the relevant version for review.
Do not assume a supplier will infer a special requirement from the product category. Agree on measurable acceptance criteria and which documents must accompany samples or deliveries.
If your brief is incomplete
You can start with the information you have. List unresolved choices such as resin, finish or forecast volume, and ask which items must be decided before a firm quotation. Keep an assumption log so changes can be reflected in a revised scope and price.
